Science

“Science is not only a disciple of reason but, also, one of romance and passion.” – Stephen Hawking

Science at Captains Close Primary School

Belonging · Ambition · Equity

Science helps pupils make sense of the world. It nurtures curiosity, deepens understanding and encourages children to ask questions, test ideas and draw conclusions. Our science curriculum ensures pupils become confident young scientists who can observe, investigate and explain the world around them.

Our approach is shaped by the Discovery Trust DNA and grounded in evidence-informed practice.

Curriculum Intent

Our intent for Science is to ensure all pupils:

  • Develop secure scientific knowledge across biology, chemistry and physics.
  • Understand and use key scientific vocabulary.
  • Work scientifically through observing, questioning, predicting, testing and concluding.
  • Build curiosity and a love of discovery.
  • Make connections between scientific ideas and real-world contexts.
  • Experience equity through adaptive teaching.

Curriculum Implementation

We deliver our Science curriculum through:

Working Scientifically

  • Asking questions.
  • Making predictions.
  • Planning investigations.
  • Observing closely.
  • Taking measurements.
  • Recording results.
  • Drawing conclusions.

  • Use of scientific vocabulary.
  • Quality of recorded work.
  • Pupil voice.
  • Assessment information.

Pupils can:

  • Explain scientific concepts clearly.
  • Use accurate vocabulary.
  • Carry out investigations independently.
  • Apply knowledge to new contexts.

Protected Characteristics in Science

We ensure pupils learn about and respect protected characteristics through:

  • Studying diverse scientists from different backgrounds.
  • Exploring scientific contributions from across cultures.
  • Challenging stereotypes about gender and science.
  • Ensuring SEND pupils access all scientific learning.
  • Discussing ethical issues such as fairness, equality and representation.

British Values in Science

British Values are woven through Science lessons:

  • Democracy: Collaborative investigations and shared decision-making.
  • Rule of Law: Following safety rules and scientific procedures.
  • Individual Liberty: Encouraging independent thinking and questioning.
  • Mutual Respect: Valuing different hypotheses and ideas.
  • Tolerance: Exploring global scientific contributions and beliefs.
